Folk storytelling, country hooks and bluegrass grit from Jenny Mitchell and Midnight Chicken.
Jenny Mitchell & Midnight Chicken play the Civic Theatre on Friday 2 April 2027, in the Playhouse. It's a single-bill night with Mitchell and her band as the main feature, and the date falls on a Friday, which makes it an easy one to fit in without having to worry about an early start the next morning.
If you're not familiar with them, the sound is a mix of folk storytelling, country hooks and bluegrass grit. The storytelling part is the core of it — Mitchell writes songs that tell stories, and the country and bluegrass elements provide the backdrop. It's a particular corner of roots music that sits somewhere between the singer-songwriter tradition and the more instrumental, high-energy side of bluegrass, and the band brings both to the stage.
Midnight Chicken is the band that backs her, and they're the ones who bring that bluegrass grit into the mix. Between Mitchell's voice and the band's playing, the set moves from the storytelling side of things to the country hooks that hold the songs together. It's a full-band show, so you'll hear the whole ensemble rather than just a solo set.
