Hands-On Pottery Workshop - Make a Salad Bowl

Tighes Hill TAFE in Islington is hosting a hands-on pottery workshop on Sunday 13 September, where you'll spend the afternoon making your own salad bowl. It's a three-hour session, running from 1pm to 4pm, and it's built around traditional hand-building techniques rather than the wheel. If you've never touched clay before, that's exactly who it's for — you'll be working the material by hand to shape the bowl from scratch.

One of the best things about the setup is that it covers the whole process in one go. You're not just paying for the time at the table; the cost includes the tuition to get you through the making, the clay itself, and the glazing and firing that happens after you've left. That last part is the bit that usually trips people up when they try pottery at home — the kiln work is all sorted for you, so you'll actually come away with a finished, food-safe piece you can use in your kitchen.

They've also thrown in a bit of hospitality to keep the afternoon moving. There's afternoon tea and a glass of champagne included, which gives the whole thing a more relaxed, social feel than a standard class. It's as much about spending a few hours with other people as it is about the pottery.
