Newcastle Music Festival concert featuring dance, piano, chamber music and narration of Ogden Nash's poems.
Hands Feet & Animals comes to the Harold Lobb Concert Hall on Saturday 8 August, the fourth programme of the Newcastle Music Festival. It's a bit of a crossover night: dance and music running side by side across two works, Dave Brubeck's Points on Jazz and Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals. The whole thing is narrated with the poems of Ogden Nash, so there's something to listen to as well as look at.
On the dance side, you've got students from the Newcastle Dance Academy performing choreography by Jessica Miller. They're paired with Chamber Music in the Hunter, a combination the festival describes as a first for them. The music is handled by two piano duos, Erin Sweetman and Greg Smith, who take on both the Brubeck and the Saint-Saëns. Barry Shepherd provides the narration, reading Nash's poems alongside the two pieces.
Chamber Music in the Hunter brings a fair-sized ensemble to the stage. Elizabeth Holowell leads on violin, with Catherine Sheng-Cooper, Paul Groh, Anthea Scott-Mitchell and Heather Price on strings, Jennifer St George and Zachary Donoghoe on woodwind, and Charissa Ferguson on percussion. The bill is supported by the University of Newcastle and the Conservatorium of Newcastle.

The concert runs from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Harold Lobb Concert Hall, inside the Newcastle Conservatorium on the corner of Laman and Auckland Streets in Cooks Hill. Tickets are available through TryBooking.
