Hand-Building Pottery Class

The Art Department is running a hand-building pottery class in Newcastle on Saturday 22 August. It's a social session where beginners and experienced artists work side by side, so it doesn't matter if you've never touched clay before or you've been at it for years.

The class is part of the studio's hand-building programme, which runs alongside their wheel throwing and themed sessions like 'Clay and Sip' and 'Clay and Coffee'. The Art Department is a women-owned pottery studio run by professional teachers, and they describe it as a place where makers of all levels can relax, get messy and connect with others while picking up new techniques. They say they've been trusted by thousands of pottery lovers over the years.

This particular session blends art, socialising and fun. Everyone gets all the clay, tools and materials they need, plus two and a half hours of hands-on instruction and the chance to make one or two unique ceramic pieces. You bring your own snacks and drinks, as the studio provides only glasses, and they advise wearing old, comfortable clothes. The studio works with Mid Fire clay, which they describe as more sustainable and more versatile when it comes to glazing and firing.

It's held at The Art Department, Unit 1, 133 King Street, Newcastle. Parking is available on Bolton Street or at Honeysuckle, with a tram stop 200m away on Hunter Street. The class is A$108 per person, with an add-on for glazing and firing that costs A$30 if purchased in the studio.
