Opera Hunter presents a bold, brand-new production of Gilbert & Sullivan's The Mikado, reimagined in steampunk splendour.
Opera Hunter is bringing The Mikado to the Multi-Arts Pavilion, mima in Newcastle from 16 to 18 October. It's a new production of the Gilbert & Sullivan operetta, and they've gone with a steampunk setting for it, so you'll be seeing the story reimagined in that brass-and-gears aesthetic rather than the traditional Japanese style.
If you're not familiar, The Mikado is one of the most famous of the G&S partnerships, known for its wit and charm. It's a comic operetta, so it's as much about the jokes and the satire as it is about the music. The steampunk twist changes the visual world around the characters, but the songs and the story stay the same.
Opera Hunter is the company behind it, and they're the ones bringing this version to the stage. The production runs over three days, from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 October, at the Multi-Arts Pavilion, mima, so you've got a few different nights to choose from if you're planning to go.
