Exhibition of photographs by Tony Mott that capture music and human connection, presented by New Annual and Newcastle Museum.
Framed in Sound: Selected Works of Tony Mott is showing at the Newcastle Museum from Tuesday 4 August to Sunday 18 October, presented by New Annual and the Museum in collaboration with Fish Out A' Water Productions and Creative Galah. It's a collection of photographs by Tony Mott, who's worked at the intersection of music, culture and photography for more than four decades.
If you've never come across his name, you've almost certainly seen his work. Mott is widely regarded as Australia's most celebrated rock and roll photographer, and the scale of his output is hard to wrap your head around: more than 30,000 photographs published across 20 countries, appearing on over 400 posters, 500 album covers and 900 magazine covers. His influence on music photography is described as unparalleled.
The exhibition pulls from a career that spans the full range of the job. There are the intimate backstage encounters, the iconic portraiture and the electrifying live performances. The names run from the Rolling Stones, Queen and Madonna down to the emerging artists and independent bands of Australia's music scene, including Newcastle itself. It's that mix that gives the show its reach — the global superstars alongside the local acts that keep the scene moving.
