Exhibition of ceramic work by Newcastle Studio Potters members at Back to Back Galleries, exploring earth and flame through pit-fired ceramics and photography.
Elemental opens at Back to Back Galleries on Friday 21 August, running through to Sunday 6 September. It's a group show of ceramic work by members of the Newcastle Studio Potters, with the opening celebrations on Saturday 22 August from 2 to 4 pm.
The exhibition is a study of earth and flame, bringing together pit-fired ceramics and photography. The artists involved have gathered around fire for many years, making, practising and experimenting with the process of pit-firing. Their photographic works extend that dialogue by incorporating scorched ceramic forms into carefully composed still lifes, re-imagining the fired objects beyond the roaring of the flame in their quiet presence interacting with light and shadow. The show traces the evolution between ceramic form and atmosphere, and the evidence of the ephemeral transformed into textured memory.
Seven artists are showing: Sonya Estens, Nicole Fernance, Gillian Karpiel, Catherine Lee, Francoise McDonald, Brydie Piaf and Michelle Watts. Each has worked with pit-firing, a process where ceramics are fired in an open pit rather than a kiln, and the resulting pieces carry the marks of the fire and ash they were buried in.

Back to Back Galleries is at 57 Bull St, Cooks Hill, in Newcastle. After the opening on Saturday, the gallery is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm, so you've got a few weekends to catch it before it closes on 6 September.
