Harpist Alice Giles, flautist Jonathan Henderson and violist James Wannan present a programme of French and contemporary chamber music for flute, viola and harp.
Alice Giles, Jonathan Henderson and James Wannan are playing the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music on Friday 2 October, a chamber music programme for flute, viola and harp presented by Contra Concerts. The set is built around French music and contemporary living composers, with the French side of things taking the lead.
Debussy is a good place to start, with his Sonata and Syrinx on the bill, and Fauré's Impromptu alongside them. Bax's Elegiac Trio fits right in there, echoing that same impressionistic language. From there the programme moves into more recent territory, with works by French composer Bruno Mantovani and Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin.
It's a trio of musicians who've worked across solo, chamber and orchestral stages internationally, and the way the concert is put together lets that come through. As the night unfolds, each one takes a turn as soloist, so you get to hear them individually as well as together. Giles is on harp, Henderson on flute and Wannan on viola.
