Hunter Drama's end-of-year showcase, an original doomsday spectacular and survival manual with dark comedy, drawing on alien invasions, climate catastrophes and zombie breakouts.
Hunter Drama are back at the Civic Theatre on Saturday 5 December with Apocalypse Survival Guide, their end-of-year showcase for 2026. It's billed as an original doomsday spectacular that doubles as a survival manual, and the scenes run through a fair few ways the world could go south: alien invasions, climate catastrophes, zombie breakouts and Wi-Fi blackouts. It's all original material, and the dark comedy comes through in how it handles the chaos.
If you're not familiar with them, Hunter Drama is Newcastle's leading youth drama and theatre company. They take in students from across the region — Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Cessnock and Singleton — and teach them drama, musical theatre, improvisation and screen skills, which they then showcase on stage every year. This is that showcase: the culmination of a year's work brought together in one show.
Artistic Director James Chapman says the 2026 season celebrates resilience and rebellion, and it follows on from a strong 2025, which saw sold-out runs of Frozen JR. and The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical. Apocalypse Survival Guide is the big finale to that run, with the company's students taking the lead on the original scenes.
