A new play by Mikaela Corrigan presented by Cats in the Cupboard Productions, exploring themes of memory and belonging through the story of three estranged sisters.
She, Her & I opens at the Civic Theatre Playhouse on Thursday 12 November, a new play by local writer Mikaela Corrigan and the latest production from Cats in the Cupboard Productions. It's part of the UpStage 2026 program, which is supported by the City of Newcastle's Community and Culture Advisory Committee to get more grassroots theatre makers and local stories onto the stage.
The story is set during a sweltering Newcastle summer, the kind where the aircon has packed it in, tempers start to fray, and the past refuses to stay buried. Three estranged sisters reunite at their family home in Bar Beach to care for their sickly mother, and as they settle back into the same house, the old frictions come right back to the surface. Corrigan uses visual media and local beach scenes to pull in themes of memory and belonging, so the setting is more than just a backdrop—it's part of the story.

Cats in the Cupboard Productions is a relatively new outfit, established in 2023, and this is one of their 2026 projects. The play runs in the Playhouse, an atmospheric 195-seat space co-located with the iconic Civic Theatre, so it's a small enough room that you'll be close to the action. If you're after a local story told on a local stage, this is exactly that: a Newcastle writer, a Newcastle setting, and a Newcastle company bringing it to life.
