Air Supply performs their 50th Anniversary Tour, billed as the absolute best of Air Supply, at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre.
Air Supply are playing the Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Saturday 12 December, part of their 50th anniversary tour across Australia and New Zealand. It's a run that brings them back to the cities that missed out after five sold-out Australian shows the previous year, and they've billed this one as 'the absolute best of Air Supply'.
If you're not familiar with the history, the duo formed in 1975 when English singer-songwriter and guitarist Graham Russell teamed up with Australian singer Russell Hitchcock. They became a soft rock phenomenon, and when 'Lost in Love' landed in Australia in October 1976 it soared to the top of the charts. It was named Song of the Year in 1980, and at the time their run of seven consecutive Top 5 singles equalled The Beatles' run. Their albums Lost in Love, The One That You Love, Now & Forever and The Greatest Hits have sold more than 40 million copies, alongside songs like 'All Out Of Love' and 'Love and Other Bruises'.
That one in particular has a bit of a story to it: in 2010 Graham Russell received a BMI Million-Air Certificate recognising three million performances of 'All Out Of Love'. It's a good sense of where the set is coming from — the tour is built around the songs that made them a household name rather than new material. With the 50th anniversary as the hook, the set will draw from the records that defined their run in the late seventies and eighties.
