Medium Build performs live at Brooklyn Bowl Nashville, supported by Eden Joel.
Medium Build plays Brooklyn Bowl Nashville on Friday, November 20, as part of his The King of Having Fun on Tour. He's bringing along Eden Joel, a 20-year-old Nashville native who has played with Stephen Sanchez, Annie DiRusso, and Mercury and Venus the Fly Traps.
Medium Build is the project of Nick Carpenter. He grew up in an evangelical household in Georgia and describes the two heartbreaks that shaped his writing as the church and his time in an indie rock band called Little Moses. He moved to Anchorage, Alaska, in 2018 and spent a few years writing stripped-down, angsty songs before signing with slowplay/Island Records and moving to Nashville in 2023. That move was followed by the 2024 album Country.
The King of Having Fun is the record he's touring now, and he calls it his best and most important. He says it grew out of a severe personal and health crisis, a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, and getting sober. "Armor" sits at the heart of the record, and "Thank You Cook," a love song to his partner Annika Bennett, closes it out. He's queer and lists his influences as ranging from Pedro the Lion and Alvvays to Harry Styles and U2.
