A guided nature hike suitable for all ages, followed by a provided snack at the Nature Play pavilion. Registration is required.
Shelby Bottoms Nature Center is hosting a Family Hike and Snack on Wednesday, October 14, from 10 AM to 11:30 AM. It's a guided hike open to all ages, so it works whether you're bringing kids or just want to get outside for a bit. The walk starts near the Nature Center and winds through the surrounding trails, and once you're back, there's a provided snack waiting at the Nature Play pavilion.
If you haven't spent much time there, the center is run by the Nashville Metropolitan Board of Parks and Recreation and sits right in the Shelby Bottoms Greenway and Shelby Park in East Nashville—less than four miles from downtown's Honky Tonk Row. It's an environmental education and recreation facility that keeps a steady rotation of free public nature and environmental education programs, school field trips, volunteer opportunities, and Scout programs, and it doubles as a natural history and education reference center.
There's plenty to see on site beyond the hike: nature and cultural history exhibits, an organic demonstration and teaching garden, and a Cumberland River Compact rain garden. There's also a children's Nature Play area and trails, and it's the trailhead for about five miles each of primitive hiking trails and paved ADA-accessible paths. Two Nashville B-Cycle bike-share stations serve the area, so you can ride in and out.
