A guided family bird walk to search for migratory birds at the Warner Park Nature Center.
Warner Park Nature Center is hosting a Family Bird Walk on Tuesday, October 13, from 10 AM to 11:30 AM. It's led by Amy Pardo and BIRD volunteers, and the whole point is to get out and look for migratory birds on their way to their southerly wintering grounds. The walk takes you across the Nature Center campus, through its fields and hills, so it's a good one to bring the kids along for.
The park is known for its mix of native fields and hilled forests, which is exactly why it's a good spot for this. The Nature Center describes itself as a place where people and nature come together, and it serves as a jump-off point for exploring more than 3,100 acres of Nashville's Burch Reserve, Percy Warner, and Edwin Warner Parks. It also acts as a reference for natural history and education, and as a resource for organic gardening and native plant landscaping. Throughout the year, it runs free programs, school field trips, high school labs, and outdoor recreation activities and events for people of all ages.
One of the more specialized things happening there is a long-term bird banding station that's been running since 1982. Trained and federally licensed researchers and volunteers capture, identify, measure, and band wild birds, which gives them a real look at the birds moving through the area. That's the same kind of bird activity this walk is built around.
