Observe federally licensed bird researchers collecting data on migration at the long-term banding station at Warner Park Nature Center.
Warner Park Nature Center is hosting another session of its fall migration bird banding on Wednesday, October 14, from 8 AM to 12 PM. It's part of a longer series of banding dates that run from September 1 through November 10, so if you can't make this one, there are plenty of other mornings to choose from.
The session takes place at the center's long-term bird banding station, a program that's been running since 1982. When you're there, you'll watch trained, federally licensed bird researchers and volunteers capture, identify, measure, and band wild birds with a unique numbered aluminum leg band before releasing them back into the wild. It's a slow, careful process, and you get to see it from start to finish.
The data they collect goes toward a broader understanding of bird populations and migration patterns, and it helps show why Warner Parks are so important for birds passing through Nashville. It's not just a one-off thing, either. The BIRD Program and Nature Center staff run free bird programs for all ages throughout the year, from bird hikes and naturalist-led walks during the spring and fall migrations to year-round education.
