Monthly series Witching Hour sees resident Sylvia Jennings debut her live solo project, with a DJ set by Madeleine Melloy (Mudd) and live projections by Moqui Joy.
Sylvia Jennings debuts her live solo project at Berlin on Thursday, January 7, as part of Witching Hour, the monthly series curated by Jennings and Madeleine Melloy. The night runs from 7 PM to 10 PM, with Jennings taking the center spot and Melloy on the decks, while Moqui Joy provides live projections throughout.
Witching Hour takes its name from the surreal hours of the night, and that's the mood they build around: Melloy and Jennings spin DJ sets and invite a live act to interpret the vibe. This edition puts one of the curators in the spotlight. Jennings' solo project draws on the lush soundscapes of '90s dream-pop and trip-hop, merging them with haunting downtempo beats. It's a shift from her usual role behind the booth, and this is the first time she's bringing the project to a live stage.
Madeleine Melloy, who records and plays as Mudd, handles the DJ sets. Her moniker is a nod to the Mudd Club and the 80s downtown New York dance haunts she collects, and her sets blend ethereal synth-pop with the driving basslines of new wave, house, and disco. Jennings comes from a different starting point: she began curating as a DJ at Radio K, hosting Off the Record and Clashed Attitudes with a focus on local and punk music, before building a reputation for sets that stitch together darkwave, French house, contemporary pop, acid house, and industrial rock. Between the two of them, the night pulls from a wide range of dancefloor and atmospheric territory.
