A hip hop battle between new school and old school DJs with interactive stations and giveaways, part of the Urgent Emergent Performance Art Series.
TruArtSpeaks brings the next installment of the Urgent Emergent Performance Art Series to Icehouse on Saturday, October 17, and this one is a hip hop battle. The night is built around a single questionβ"Which school is the best school?"βand the answer is left up to the crowd. The new school is represented by DJ Mickey Breeze, MaLLy, and Maria Isa; the old school by DJ LayZ T, Rozay Bella, and Ken-C. Tim Wilson of Urban Lights is guest curating the whole thing.
It's not just a back-and-forth on stage, either. The room will have interactive hip hop stations and giveaways, so you're doing more than just watching from a table. The whole evening is set up to let the audience weigh in on the debate between the two generations.
This is Volume Ten of the series, and it marks a big milestone: the 20th anniversary of TruArtSpeaks. The organization was founded in 2006 by Tish Jones, and it's spent two decades giving artists a platform for timely, innovative work. The Urgent Emergent Performance Art Series itself is a year-long residency at Icehouse that runs monthly, every third Saturday, bringing together new and returning collaborators to present performance art that feels urgent and emergent. This particular night is sponsored in part by Carbon Sound.
