First solo exhibition by Houston-born, Twin Cities-based interdisciplinary artist Grover Hogan, with mixed-media artefacts, paintings and altars.
Grover Hogan is showing True Stories at Public Functionary through November 15, their first solo exhibition. It's a collection of colorful mixed-media artifacts, paintings, and altars that grew out of a specific project Hogan has been working on since early 2025.
For the past year and a half, Hogan has been studying the Tarot's major arcana, spending about a month embodying each card in what they call a Fool's Journey. That process—spending time with one card at a time—shaped an interdisciplinary practice of self-reflection and growth, and True Stories is the result. The work combines pedagogy, esoteric trial and error, and personal narrative to examine the collective American Shadow Self, and Hogan is best known for self-portraiture and confessional-style art.
Hogan is a queer, Black and Mexican interdisciplinary artist from Houston, Texas, now based in the Twin Cities. They earned a BFA from Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 2021, spent 2023 to 2025 as an artist-in-residence at PF Studios Incubator, and spent 2025 at the Grand Marais Artist Colony. They're also a 2025/26 Jerome Fellow. The show is hosted by Public Functionary, the artist-led space in Northeast Minneapolis that's been cultivating an intergenerational artist network since 2012.
