Live 'hot jazz' show recreating 1920s New Orleans with brass, ragtime and blues classics in the Granada Theater.
The Jazz Room: A Journey to the Heart of New Orleans comes to the Granada Theater on Saturday, October 24, with two showtimes: 6 PM to 7 PM and 8 PM to 9 PM. Doors open at 7:30 PM for the second showing. If you can't make that date, there's another performance on Sunday, December 13, at 6 PM.
The show is built around a street-style bar that recreates 1920s New Orleans, with low lighting and immersive sound. The music is "hot jazz," a blend of ragtime, brass, and blues, and the set includes classics like St. James Infirmary, When the Saints Go Marching In, On the Sunny Side of the Street, Basin Street Blues, and Hello Dolly, with room for spontaneous improvisation. It's a tribute to the city where jazz began.
The Granada Theater in Uptown Minneapolis is as much a part of the night as the music. Built in 1928 as an atmospheric movie palace in the Spanish Churrigueresque style, its curved ceiling projects stars and clouds to evoke an outdoor Spanish garden. These days it works as a boutique venue with top-of-the-line acoustics, a 600-person capacity, and full ADA accessibility.
