Indie-folk show by Ponyfolk, the duo of Clifton Nesseth and Paul Sauey, at Animales Barbecue Co.
Ponyfolk play Animales Barbecue Co. on Saturday, October 24, from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM. It's a single-act bill, so they're the only ones on the program.
If you haven't come across them before, Ponyfolk is a duo formed in 2014 by Clifton Nesseth and Paul Sauey. They're both multi-instrumentalists, and that's where a lot of the band's character comes from. Nesseth handles vocals, strings, guitar, and synth/keys; Sauey takes on vocals, strings, guitar, and bass. Between the two of them, they cover a fair amount of ground, and they both sing, which brings their vocal harmonies to the front of the sound.
They've built a reputation for what they call maximalist soundscapes. The music is built from droning layers of guitars, strings, and synth textures, and those layers sit under emotionally evocative lyrical imagery. The result is an immersive brand of indie-folk that blends rich harmonies with a slow-building, textured sound. It's the kind of thing that takes a little time to open up, and the set runs for an hour and a half, so there's plenty of room for those textures to settle in.
