Artist talk by Carol Lee Chase discussing her exhibition 'Now Where Was I?' at Lowry Hill Gallery.
Carol Lee Chase is showing fifteen new paintings at Lowry Hill Gallery in Minneapolis, with the exhibition running from October 24 through November 28. The opening reception is October 24, and the artist talk is Saturday, November 7 at 4 PM.
Chase is a Minneapolis artist who retired in 2024 from an academic career that took her through Whitman College, UW River Falls, and most recently, St. Catherine University. This is her first gallery show since 2019, coming after a year of crisis in Minneapolis and a period of change in her life and work. The paintings are built with glazing techniques that create an even surface of saturated color, with landscape elements emerging as abstracted forms veiled in shadow. They draw on a collection of her own photographs taken at Lake Superior, the Midwestern prairie, the banks of the Mississippi, and the willow in her backyard; she describes each image as a portal to her memory of a place and a moment.

The show is presented concurrently with Rod Massey's One Thing After Another. Lowry Hill Gallery runs a rotating schedule that changes roughly every six weeks, and artists typically work toward their shows about two years out. If you want to hear from the artist herself, the talk is on Saturday, November 7 at 4 PM.
