Exhibition of new experimental work by artist Sarah Abdel-Jelil at the Soo Visual Arts Center.
Sarah Abdel-Jelil is showing new experimental work at Soo Visual Arts Center (SooVAC) in Minneapolis, with a closing reception on Saturday, November 7. The exhibition has been running since now and stays up through November 8, so you've got plenty of time to catch it before the reception marks the end of the run.
If you aren't familiar with the space, SooVAC is a nonprofit art center that's been around since June 2001. Over the years, they've shown more than 2,800 under-represented artists and draw about 10,000 visitors a year, and they've built a reputation for discovering new talent with a strong focus on emerging artists from Minnesota. Their curatorial line favors contemporary work that challenges conventional notions of aesthetics and ideology, and they've been open about valuing content over salability. They also act as an advocate for the career development and growth of the artists they exhibit.
Beyond the exhibitions, they keep a full calendar of free year-round programming, including educational support, artist talks, workshops, events, printed publications, and online programming. This show fits right into that mixโit's a look at new experimental work from Abdel-Jelil in a space that makes a point of championing artists who might not get as much visibility elsewhere.
