Exhibition by Minneapolis artist Erika Terwilliger that transforms household debris like leaves, ductwork and plastic tarps into sculptural work.
Erika Terwilliger is showing Catch-All at Soo Visual Arts Center (SooVAC) through November 8, 2026. The exhibition opened on September 20, so it's been running for a while now, and you've still got a few weeks to catch it if you haven't made it in yet.
The work comes from a place most of us recognize: the pockets of material that just sort of pile up around the house. Terwilliger gathered things like gutters clogged with silver maple leaves, corroding ventilation ductwork, and fragments of blue plastic tarp, and transformed them through handwork. The process she uses mirrors the repetitive motions of daily life—folding, wrapping, dipping, and stacking—and the pieces take their form through those small acts of transformation. It's a deeply embodied way of making, and the resulting work holds a material conversation between what we keep and what we toss.
Terwilliger is a Minneapolis-based visual artist who earned her BA in Studio Arts from St. Olaf College in 2016 and her MFA from the University of Minnesota in 2020. She's held residencies at The Jentel Foundation, Second Shift Studios, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, and Franconia Sculpture Park, was a 2022 MCAD Jerome Fellowship recipient, and now lectures in the University of Minnesota's sculpture and ceramics department. The show is at SooVAC, the nonprofit art space founded by artist Suzy Greenberg in 2001.
