Free storytelling sessions where visitors share personal memories in small circles, moderated by trained facilitators and led by Mixed Blood Theatre.
Mixed Blood Theatre brings Story Circles to the Walker Art Center on Thursday, October 29, for a night of storytelling in small groups. The idea is simple: you sit in a circle of strangers, share your own memories, and listen to the stories your neighbors bring to the table. By the time the session wraps, the goal is that you leave as friends.
Each session works from a different theme, so the conversation shifts depending on when you drop in. One might be "When did you first see yourself as an artist?", another "What's your best ghost story?" Each one is moderated by trained facilitators who keep things moving, and the whole format draws on grassroots theatre and civil rights organizing. Mixed Blood describes it as a bold, honest, and powerful way of communal sharing and bonding.
Behind the project are Mixed Blood's Artistic Director Mark Valdez and Associate Artistic Director Alejandro Tey. Valdez is an artist and cultural organizer who uses theatre and creative tools to lift up community voices, and he was awarded the Johnson Fellowship for Artists Transforming Communities. Tey is a Cuban American, South Texas-raised theatre maker. Together they're bringing this approach to the Walker, where the focus is on the voices in the room rather than a performance on a stage.
