Live gypsy jazz session by the Twin Cities band Mill City Hot Club, with a changing line-up of professional improvisers.
Mill City Hot Club plays Volstead's Emporium Uptown on Friday, October 23, from 8:30 PM to 11:30 PM. The group was started by founding member and guitarist Dean Harrington, and the music is rooted in gypsy jazz—the style pioneered in the 1920s by Belgian guitarist Django Reinhardt and French violinist Stéphane Grappelli of the Quintet of the Hot Club of France.
The core instrumentation stays true to that sound: two acoustic gypsy guitars of the Selmer/MacCafferi type, upright bass, and violin. From there, they pull in accordion, clarinet, and drums. While they honor the original hot-club sound, they range into modern jazz, Latin jazz, blues, and 1950s-1960s swing, playing in both acoustic and electric formats. The music is described as joyful, upbeat, and danceable.
