Annual Midwest Greek Step Show with NPHC organizations performing and competing for cash prizes, part of UMN Homecoming.
The Midwest Greek Step Show returns to Northrop on Thursday, October 22, at 7 PM. It's an annual tradition that falls within UMN Homecoming, and the format is exactly what the name suggests: the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) organizations take the stage to perform and compete against one another for cash prizes.
If you're not familiar with the tradition, stepping is a form of percussive dance where the performers use their whole bodies as instruments—clapping, stomping, and chanting in tight synchronization. The NPHC organizations are the historically Black Greek-letter organizations, and this is the night they bring their routines to the stage to see who comes out on top. Because it's a competition, there's a specific energy to it that you don't get from a standard showcase; each group is performing for a prize, not just for the crowd.
