A punk-rock, queer and rebellious reimagining of the true-crime case of Lizzie Borden, performed by a cast of four and a live band.
Lizzie: The Rock Musical is back at Open Eye Theatre in Minneapolis, running from October 1 through November 1. It's a punk-rock, queer and rebellious reimagining of the true-crime case of Lizzie Borden, set in the summer of 1892 when a wealthy businessman and his wife were murdered in their home and Lizzie became the prime suspect. The show brings the legend to life with fierce vocals and high-voltage energy, dramatizing the historical crime through a modern rock lens.
On stage, Lux Mortenson takes on the role of Lizzie Borden. The production is directed by Joel Sass, with music by Steven Cheslik-DeMeyer and Alan Stevens Hewitt, book by Tim Maner, and choreography by Abby Magalee. The whole thing is carried by a cast of four and a live band, The Forty Whacks, who provide the punk-rock backbone. It runs 90 minutes with one intermission, and it's recommended for ages 14 and up.
This isn't its first time around—the production has won eight 'Best Musical' awards and is returning by popular demand after a completely sold-out run. If you've heard the name Lizzie Borden before, you know the basic story, but this version trades the Victorian parlor for a loud, high-energy rock approach.
