Solo exhibition of nine large-scale works by painter Kim Benson, with an artist talk, at TOA Presents' new space in Northeast Minneapolis.
Kim Benson is back in the Twin Cities with a solo show at TOA Presents, 1808 Quincy Street NE in Northeast Minneapolis. It's her first solo exhibition here since 2022, and it brings together nine large-scale paintings that pull from the conceptual and compositional threads she's been working through over the last five years.
Benson is a process-based painter, and that's a good place to start with her work. It's physical, dense, and material-rich—the paint sits on the surface rather than receding into an illusionistic space. She draws on El Greco, the Baroque, and the Renaissance, and works with elemental forms—circles, triangles, and squares—that first emerged during a 2022 show at TOA Presents. Her imagery often incorporates hands, books, and collage, and she's worked in diptychs. This show gathers those elements into one room.
There's a bit more to this one than just the paintings. The exhibition marks the inaugural show at TOA Presents' new and expanded location in Northeast Minneapolis, just around the corner from its previous space. Benson has worked for years with Rob Sherer, director and founder of The Orange Advisory and TOA Presents, so this feels like a fitting way to open the new spot. She's shown with Hair and Nails around 2016, in the three-person show Relief with Rachel Collier and Sheila Wagner, and at the Minnesota Museum of American Art, The Auction at MCAD, and the Walker Art Center.
