Free in-gallery conversation in which Mia guides are stationed in the galleries to talk with visitors about contemporary artworks on display.
Contemporary Encounters is the next in-gallery conversation at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, coming on Saturday, May 1, 2027. It's part of Mia's free public tours, which run Thursday through Sunday and give you a way to engage with the collection through themed, guided experiences rather than just walking through on your own.
During a conversation, Mia guides are stationed in the galleries for two hours. There's no set start or end time, and no lecture to sit through: you join in at your own pace as you explore the museum. The guides are there for you to stop by, look closely at the art, ask questions, and talk through the pieces on display. It's a low-pressure way to spend a couple of hours in the galleries, and you can drop in and out whenever you like.
This particular session, Contemporary Encounters, focuses on contemporary art and new perspectives on the ideas shaping our world. If you've ever looked at a piece of modern art and wondered where to start or what it's actually getting at, this is a good place to find some footing. You can spend as much or as little time as you want with the work, with a guide nearby to help you parse it.
