Free jazz evening with trumpeter Ryan Garmoe and pianist Patrick Adkins playing original compositions and jazz standards.
Ryan Garmoe and Patrick Adkins are playing a duo set at Berlin in the North Loop on Saturday, October 31, from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM. The program mixes original compositions with a handful of jazz standards, so you'll hear their own writing alongside some of the songs they've kept in their books.
Garmoe is a Minneapolis trumpeter and composer who leads Wave Cage, a fusion group that picked up a Jazz Road Tours grant to tour the Midwest. Their 2023 debut, Even You Can See in the Dark, came out on Shifting Paradigm Records, and he's also put out Sketches, a collection of ambient pieces. Adkins is a Minneapolis pianist and composer who works as both a bandleader and a sideman; he's played with JT Bates, Dean Magraw, Davu Seru, Michelle Kinney, and Brandon Wozniak. He's also a member of the modern jazz collective SPACE, which released The Approaching Coast and Non-Trivial Problem, and he plays synthesizers for the indie glam-pop band d'Lakes.
Between them, they've got a fair amount of ground covered—fusion, ambient, modern jazz, and indie pop—and this duo pulls from that. The set balances their original writing with the standards they've kept around, so it's a look at where they're coming from as much as what they're working on now. It's an early evening show, too, so you're in and out before the night really gets going.
