Daði Freyr performs live with special guest BRÍET at the historic First Avenue venue in Minneapolis.
Daði Freyr plays First Avenue on Saturday, October 17, with BRÍET opening. Both are Icelandic, and both bring a pop sensibility that's a bit off-center from what you usually hear on the radio.
Freyr's music is playful synth-pop with a bit of a wink to it. He describes it as fun, thoughtful, and a little unexpected, and that's a fair way to put it—the songs lean on bright melodies and witty lyrics, the kind of stuff that sticks in your head long after the set is over. It's pop that doesn't take itself too seriously, but it's written with enough care that it doesn't just slide off.
BRÍET opens the night. An award-winning Icelandic singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, she works in a different register: raw, heartfelt storytelling paired with hypnotic pop melodies. Where Freyr is bright and playful, she's more grounded and atmospheric, so the two together cover a good bit of ground. Between them, you get a full evening of Icelandic pop from two very different angles.
