Free exhibition of more than 20 crop art works from the Minnesota State Fair, including the five 'Best in Show' ribbons, at the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
Cream of the Crop: Second Harvest opens at the Minneapolis Institute of Art on October 18 and runs through November 29. It's a crop art exhibition, and the work comes straight from the Minnesota State Fair's crop art showcase. If you've ever spent a day at the fair, you know the crop art building—it's one of those traditions that's uniquely Minnesota, where artists make portraits and landscapes out of seeds, grains, and dried legumes. This show takes that same work and puts it in a museum setting, so you can see it without the fairground crowds.
It's a larger show than last year's. There are more than 20 works on display, and among them are the five that earned the 'Best in Show' ribbons. That's the top prize for the crop art competition, so these are the pieces the judges rated highest. The exhibition is part of the Great Minnesota Get-Together, the city's larger celebration of the state's culture and traditions.
If you're not familiar with how crop art works, it's basically painting with seeds. Artists use different grains and legumes for color and texture, gluing them down to build an image. Seeing them up close in a gallery is a different experience than catching them in the bustle of the fair—you can really slow down and look at the detail that goes into each piece. Between the 20-plus works and the five ribbon-winners, there's plenty to spend some time with.
