Free vinyl listening party of Charles Mingus's 'Mingus Ah Um' at Berlin in the North Loop, part of the weekly Crates series.
Berlin in the North Loop is hosting another session of Crates on Thursday, October 22, this time centered on Mingus Ah Um by Charles Mingus. The night is a vinyl listening party, which means the record is played through the room's d&b PA system rather than a live band taking the stage. It's a focused way to hear an album from start to finish, with the sound filling the space instead of coming through a pair of headphones.
Mingus Ah Um is one of the most celebrated records in jazz, released in 1959. It's a collection of Mingus's compositions that draws on gospel, hard bop, and the blues, with a heavy emphasis on the ensemble's collective sound. Hearing it on a club system like Berlin's gives the bass and the horns room to breathe, and lets you track the shifts in energy across the whole record.
Crates is a weekly series held every Thursday night at Berlin, with a different record at the center of each session. The format is the same every time: one album, played on vinyl, through the house system. If you've been following the series, you know the drillβeach week brings a new record to the foreground, and this one happens to be Mingus.
