Weekly Sunday residency of pianist Cornbread Harris, a Minnesota Music Hall of Famer, at Schooner Tavern.
Church of Cornbread is back at Schooner Tavern on Sunday, October 25, starting at 5 PM. It's a weekly residency, so if you can't make this one, there's usually another Sunday right behind it. The name comes from the man at the center of the whole thing: pianist Cornbread Harris, a Minnesota Music Hall of Famer who is now 99 years old.
Harris has been gigging in the Twin Cities since the end of World War II, which means he's been playing these rooms for over eighty years. He's known for an encyclopedic command of standards and classics, and he mixes those in with his own original compositions. The residency used to be held at Palmer's Bar before it moved over to Schooner Tavern.
There's a fair bit of history tied to the residency beyond the piano bench. Harris is the subject of Andrea Swensson's biography Deeper Blues: The Life, Songs, and Salvation of Cornbread Harris. Swensson, a former The Current DJ, also runs Slingshot Annie Records, the label that released Anthology, a collection of his songs recorded over sixty-six years. The residency is closely tied to the label, and the music you'll hear live draws from that same deep well.
