An intimate evening of original music, soul and folk with vocalist Bruce Henry and guitarist Dean Magraw at the Dunsmore Jazz Room.
Bruce Henry and Dean Magraw play the Dunsmore Jazz Room on Friday, October 23, for a night of original music, soul, and folk. It's a pairing of two musicians who usually move in different circles: Henry is a vocalist and composer, Magraw a guitarist. Together they're stripping things down to voice and guitar, and the set draws from those three styles—original songs, soul, and folk—rather than sticking to one.
Henry brings a wide range to the table. Born in West Point, Mississippi, and raised in Chicago, he's an internationally recognized vocalist, composer, educator, and cultural historian. His voice spans three and a half octaves, and he draws on Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye, and John Coltrane. Mpls.St.Paul Magazine called him "a true master of the jazz art form."
Magraw comes from a different tradition. He's spent years working solo and collaborating across folk, bluegrass, and global roots, and his credits read like a who's who of that scene: John Gorka, Darol Anger, The Big Wu, Peter Ostroushko, Boiled in Lead, and Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh of Altan. He's built a distinct style through that work, and here he'll be the one providing the accompaniment for Henry's vocals.
