Cross-disciplinary artist Alessandro Sciarroni turns the choral experience into an immersive sonic ceremony with Cantus, an a cappella men's vocal ensemble.
Alessandro Sciarroni brings U. (un canto) to the Walker Art Center on Wednesday, June 2, 2027. It's a cross-disciplinary piece that sits somewhere between a concert and a rite, and it's making its US debut here in Minneapolis. The Walker is billing it as an exclusive performance, so this is the first time the work will be staged on this side of the Atlantic.
On stage, seven vocalists perform a range of Italian choral songs from the last 70 years. The music is built on ancient polyphonic harmonies, and those harmonies move in purposeful juxtaposition to Sciarroni's exactingly static choreography. The result is an immersive sonic ceremony, and the Walker describes it as a choral experience turned into something more than just a performance. It's part of the center's 2026-2027 Performing Arts Season.
Sciarroni isn't doing this alone. He's co-presenting the work with Cantus, the eight-member, full-time, low-voice a cappella ensemble based right here in Minneapolis. Fanfare Magazine has called them the premier men's vocal ensemble in the United States, and they're the local partner on this one.
