An analogue screening of the debut feature from artist Stillz, produced by Harmony Korine, presented from a VHS tape.
Barrio Triste is coming to HOME on Saturday 14 November, as part of a VHS screening. It's the debut feature from Stillz, an acclaimed photographer and music video director, and it's being presented from a VHS tape rather than a digital file.
Set in Medellín in 1987, the story follows a group of teenage outcasts who steal a news camera to document the details of their dangerous lives. It's a coming-of-age story that works with found footage, and it's described as a haunting one. The score is by Arca, and the film was produced by Harmony Korine's collective EDGLRD.
Stillz has built his reputation as a photographer and music video director before this, so this is his first full-length feature. The Medellín setting and the 1987 date place it in a specific time and place, and the news camera the characters steal becomes the lens through which they record their own lives. The found footage style is central to the whole thing, and the VHS format of the screening leans into that analogue feel.
