The Ukrainian National Philharmonic Orchestra makes its International Concert Series debut, with Mark Bebbington on piano, performing works by Brahms, Mozart, Manu Martin and Ivan Nebesnyy.
The Ukrainian National Philharmonic Orchestra make their International Concert Series debut at The Bridgewater Hall on Monday 1 March 2027, with Theodore Kuchar conducting and pianist Mark Bebbington joining them. It's their first appearance in the hall's flagship classical season, which is now in its 30th year.
The night is built around Beethoven's Seventh Symphony, a work Richard Wagner once called 'the apotheosis of the dance'. It also marks the Manchester premiere of Ivan Nebesnyy's Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, a Ukrainian Romeo-and-Juliet story that's travelled from book to film to ballet. The rest of the programme brings together Brahms' Hungarian Dance No.5, Mozart's Piano Concerto No.21 ('Elvira Madigan'), and Manu Martin's Lim.
There's a bit more to the timing than just the date. The spring section of the International Concert Series centres on the 200th anniversary of Beethoven, and this night is part of the hall's Beethoven 200 series. The season itself opens with a choral programme by The Sixteen and Harry Christophers, welcomes the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra as a series regular for the first time, and closes in summer 2027 with the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra, part of the new Sister City partnership between Osaka and Greater Manchester.
