A cinematic portrayal of young love in Brussels during the 1940s, directed by Frank van Passel.
The Soundman is coming to HOME on Wednesday 25 November, a cinematic look at young love in Brussels during the 1940s. It's directed by Frank van Passel, and the story is as much about sound as it is about the people in it.
The film is set in May 1940 and follows two people working at a Brussels radio station. Elza is a talented young voice actor, though she's secretly a Jewish refugee from Vienna. Berre is an innovative, introverted sound engineer who creates the sound effects for the station's radio plays. They're both working in the same building, but they're coming from very different places, and the relationship that grows between them is the heart of the thing.
As war looms over the city, Elza's true identity is exposed, and the relationship is put to the test. It's described as a portrayal of young love swept up by the dark tides of history, and it's a cinematic depiction of sound as much as anything else — that's where the title comes from. The radio station, with its voice actors and sound effects, is the world they're both part of, and it's the backdrop for everything that happens.
