A witty yet touching fable about finding your voice and sticking up for yourself, this production follows a young girl who fills her small bedroom with pitch-perfect renditions of her deceased father's record collection.
The Rise and Fall of Little Voice runs at The Lyric Theatre at The Lowry from 23 to 27 February 2027. It's Jim Cartwright's Northern fairytale, first staged in 1992, and this production comes to Manchester after a run at the National Theatre in London, directed by Robert Hastie.
The story centres on Laura Hoff, a young girl who spends her time in a small bedroom filling it with pitch-perfect renditions of her late father's record collection. The voices she mimics are the great divas: Judy Garland, Billie Holiday, Monroe, Piaf, Dietrich and Springfield. When her mother Mari's latest fling, the local wheeler-dealer Ray, hears her sing, he's convinced he's struck gold, and Laura is pushed into a spotlight she never asked for. It's a witty, touching fable about finding your voice and sticking up for yourself, and it was followed by a film adaptation in 1998.
On stage, Francesca Mills takes the role of Little Voice, with Jill Halfpenny as Mari. The production is directed by Robert Hastie, who also led the National Theatre run. They describe it as a joyful, tender and bittersweet celebration of music, ambition and the courage it takes to be heard.
