Two classic sci-fi horror films screened back-to-back as part of the FilmFear festival at HOME, with an introduction.
HOME is closing its FilmFear festival on Sunday 1 November with a double bill of Quatermass and the Pit and Lifeforce, both preceded by an introduction. The two sci-fi horror classics run back-to-back, with the session starting in the afternoon.
Quatermass and the Pit (dir. Roy Ward Baker, GB 1967, 98 mins) is the first half. It follows a Martian spaceship unearthed during London subway construction, with Nigel Kneale's scientist Bernard Quatermass played by Andrew Keir. Lifeforce (dir. Tobe Hooper, US 1985, 116 mins) takes over for the second half. It adapts Colin Wilson's novel The Space Vampires: during a mission to Halley's Comet, an astronaut crew discovers a spacecraft housing three humanoid creatures that threaten humanity.
Hooper, the director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist, made Lifeforce via Cannon Films with Dan O'Bannon of Alien. Contemporary critics found it excessive, but genre fans later regarded it as a unique take on the vampire movie. Between the two, you've got nearly four hours of sci-fi horror on one screen, with the 1967 British classic and the 1985 American cult hit paired together.

The screening closes FilmFear, a four-night festival of cinematic terror running in partnership with Film4 over Halloween weekend, with each night pairing two classic or cult horror films back-to-back. This is the final pairing of the run, so it's the last chance to catch the festival's double-bill format. Quatermass and the Pit runs 98 minutes and Lifeforce 116, with an introduction to open the session.
