A vibrant documentary portrait of Peter Asher, a key figure in modern music history, screened at HOME.
HOME is screening Everywhere Man, a documentary portrait of Peter Asher, on Tuesday 3 November at 19:30 and Wednesday 4 November at 13:00. The film runs for 117 minutes and features interviews with James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt and Carole King.
If you've never come across the name, Asher is one of those figures who's spent most of his career working behind the scenes, but his fingerprints are all over modern music history. He started as a child actor in 1950s London, then became half of the pop duo Peter and Gordon, who scored four chart-topping hits written by Paul McCartney. From there he moved into the business side of things, becoming the first head of A&R at Apple Records and co-owning the Indica Gallery, which sat at the centre of London's countercultural art scene.
As a producer and manager, he helped define a generation of singer-songwriters, cementing his reputation as one of the most influential forces behind the glass in the 1970s and '80s. He's still active today, performing and producing, and most recently collaborated with Barbra Streisand on her album The Secret of Life. The film traces that whole arc, from child actor and pop star to manager and producer for some of the world's biggest artists.
