Opera North presents Verdi's Rigoletto at The Lowry, a bold and innovative production directed by Femi Elufowoju Jr.
Opera North are bringing Verdi's Rigoletto to The Lowry at Salford Quays, with the Manchester dates running from Thursday 12 November to Saturday 14 November. It's part of their wider tour, which runs from 18 October to 20 November, so this is one of the few chances to catch it in the city.
This isn't a new production; it first opened in 2022 and has been touring since. It's directed by Femi Elufowoju Jr, and the reviews have been strong: The Telegraph called it 'a bold, innovative and purposeful re-imagining', The Guardian described it as 'chillingly excellent', and Bachtrack hailed it as 'a landmark production'. It's sung in the original Italian, with English subtitles projected on big screens at the sides of the stage, so you can follow the story even if you don't speak the language.
On stage, Blake Denson and Siphe Kwani share the role of Rigoletto, Raven McMillon and Jasmine Habersham take on Gilda, and Sir Willard White sings Count Monterone, with Patrick Lange conducting. The production doesn't shy away from the darker side of the story, dealing with adult themes including violence against women, abduction and murder, and Act III includes flashing lights. If you need a bit more support, audio described and relaxed performances are available.
