Matthew Bourne's acclaimed ballet Cinderella, set in London during the Blitz, returns to The Lowry for its 30th anniversary.
Matthew Bourne's Cinderella returns to the Lyric Theatre at The Lowry from 24 to 28 November, part of a run that marks 30 years since it first premiered in the West End in 1997. It's a ballet set in London during the Blitz, and the story is a wartime romance: Cinderella and a young RAF pilot meet, share a magical night and fall in love before they're parted by the horrors of the Blitz. The whole thing is set to Sergei Prokofiev's score.
This isn't the original 1997 version, though. A revised production debuted in 2010 with new choreography and design, and that's the one that went on to tour and build its own reputation. It's also part of New Adventures' 30th anniversary celebrations, following their run of The Red Shoes.
There's a fair bit of a cast to keep track of. Hannah Kremer and Katrina Lyndon share the role of Cinderella; Reece Causton and Rory Macleod play Harry, Cinderella's pilot; James Lovell, Andy Monaghan and Kingston Taylor take on The Angel, who's the 'Fairy GodFather' here; and Nicole Kabera, Daisy West and Michela Meazza play Sybil, Cinderella's step-mother. Direction and choreography are by Matthew Bourne, with set and costume design by Lez Brotherston, lighting by Neil Austin, sound by Paul Groothuis, and video and projection by Duncan McLean. The music is Sergei Prokofiev's.
