Jon Hopkins brings his instrumental live show to Manchester, centred on a longform piano performance with cello, guitar and electronics.
Jon Hopkins plays The Hall, Aviva Studios on Wednesday 25 November, bringing an instrumental live show that's built around longform piano. It's a fully seated performance, so you'll be watching from a chair rather than standing in a crowd.
On piano, Hopkins is joined by Maddie Ashman on cello, live effects and vocals, and Leo Abrahams on guitar. Together they take the set from hushed, meditative playing into vast waves of noise, cello, guitar and electronics. The piano stays at the centre, but the other three voices build around it, pulling the sound out from those quiet beginnings and into something much larger. It's a trio performance, so you'll see them playing together on stage rather than a solo set with backing.
The night opens with Hinako Omori, whose work fuses piano, electronics and vocals. She describes her music as something that invites the audience into an open and unboundaried state, and her set comes before the main show, so the evening starts with her before Hopkins and his collaborators take over.
