The Hallé Orchestra performs Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, alongside Rautavaara's 'Cantus Arcticus' and the UK premiere of Joan Tower's 'A New Day', conducted by Kristiina Poska with Alban Gerhardt on cello.
The Hallé are at The Bridgewater Hall on Thursday 11 March 2027, with a second performance on Sunday 14 March. It's part of Beethoven 200, a series the venue has put together to mark the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven's death in 1827, with the programme built around some of his most significant works.
The headliner is Symphony No. 5, the one that needs no introduction, running about 31 minutes. It's paired with two contemporary pieces that sit quite far from it. First up is Einojuhani Rautavaara's Cantus Arcticus, an 18-minute work where flutes interweave with birdsong and trombones turn into cranes and swans. Then comes Joan Tower's A New Day, a 24-minute UK premiere dedicated to her partner of 48 years, Jeff, with cellist Alban Gerhardt taking the cello part.
Kristiina Poska is conducting, and Gerhardt is the featured soloist on the Tower. The whole thing is sponsored by CMS and Manchester Airport Group.
