A live simulation and screen-based artwork by Theo Triantafyllidis that uses real-time atmospheric data and generative technology to explore climate uncertainty.
Theo Triantafyllidis brings Funny Weather to The Social at Aviva Studios, starting 11 November. It's a live simulation and screen-based artwork that takes over the Media Wall, and it's the first commission of 'Behind the Screen', a new initiative Factory International is running with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne, Onassis ONX in Athens and New York, and M+ in Hong Kong to support digital art and screen-based practice.
The piece looks at a world of accelerating climate uncertainty, and it puts the weather front and centre. It pulls in real-time atmospheric data and recent bird sightings, and runs them through a bespoke, locally hosted generative technology the artist calls an 'AI Oracle'. Together, they build a constantly evolving picture of the skies above, so it changes as the weather does.
Triantafyllidis works across games, live simulations, performances and installations, and he often uses the logic of play to tackle ecological collapse, social entanglement and networked desire. He's exhibited at the Whitney Museum in New York, Centre Pompidou in Metz and Buk-SEMA in Seoul, and he won this year's Frieze London Artist Award, where he debuted a new work, Feral Metaverse (Spider).
