Factory Moves: Espíritu Flamenco

Espíritu Flamenco are taking over The Social at Aviva Studios on Sunday 22 November for an afternoon of flamenco workshops and performances. It's part of Factory International's Factory Moves, a dance programme dedicated to supporting grassroots artists, collectives and dance institutions in Manchester, with strands like Talk, Learn, Exchange and Present.

Rather than a standard show, the session is designed to open a window onto the family culture of flamenco and contemporary flamenco today—both rooted in the traditions that led UNESCO to list the art form as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It runs through workshops, a Q&A with the artists and audience participation, alongside performances, so you're not just watching from a seat; there's a chance to get involved and ask questions.

The line-up brings together four different roles. Sarah Chambers is a flamenco dancer and teacher who's studied the art form for over 16 years. Julio Ruiz is a professional dancer and choreographer, originally from Almería and the first flamenco bailaor awarded a residency at the Centre National de la Danse de Paris. Teresa Hernández handles the singing and guitar, and José 'El Peli' Muñoz is on guitar. Between them, they cover the dance, the song and the guitar that make up the core of the tradition.

It's suitable for all ages, though under-14s need to be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over. The session starts at 2pm and runs for three hours, and it's free, though you'll need to book your place in advance. All access tickets must be bought directly from Factory International. The venue is The Social, Aviva Studios, St John's, Manchester, M3 4JQ.
