English National Ballet's Romeo & Juliet, choreographed by Rudolf Nureyev, with live orchestral music by the English National Ballet Philharmonic.
English National Ballet bring Romeo & Juliet to the Palace Theatre from Wednesday 21 October, with performances running through to Sunday 25 October. It's a run of five nights in the city, and it's part of a wider UK tour that takes the production to Liverpool Empire, Mayflower Theatre Southampton and the London Coliseum, where it first premiered.
This particular version was choreographed by Rudolf Nureyev, who created it for Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee in 1977. It's returning to the stage in its 50th anniversary year, so it's a production with a fair bit of history behind it. On stage, the company works through Shakespeare's story from the couple's first meeting to its emotional conclusion, and the English National Ballet Philharmonic performs Prokofiev's score live throughout, including the Dance of the Knights.
