New experiential production of Philip Glass and Robert Wilson's 1976 opera, with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.
English National Opera are bringing Einstein on the Beach to The Hall, Aviva Studios on Tuesday 1 June 2027. It's a new experiential production of Philip Glass and Robert Wilson's 1976 opera, staged by ENO alongside Factory International, Park Avenue Armory and Improbable.
If you've followed ENO's recent run, you'll recognise where this fits. Einstein on the Beach is the third part of Glass's Portrait Trilogy, following the sell-out and critically acclaimed Satyagraha and Akhnaten. Visionary theatre director Phelim McDermott returns to complete the set, with designer Tom Pye joining him for this one. The production is built around Glass's mesmerising score, and the work takes its cues from Einstein's scientific ideas, taking audiences on an imaginative journey through time, humanity and the way we understand the world. The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra will be there on the night, providing the orchestral weight that a score like this needs.
It's a big collaboration, with ENO working together with Factory International, Park Avenue Armory and Improbable to bring it to life. The production is described as experiential, which gives you a sense of how it's put together — it's as much about the space and the experience as it is about the music. The Hall is part of Aviva Studios on Water Street, M3 4JQ, which sits within Factory International Manchester.
